- Adult ADHD Therapy | Simply Mindful Counseling
Cognitive Behavioral Therapy or CBT is a common therapeutic modality used to treating ADHD. CBT can help to address and counter irrational thoughts and alleviate troubling emotions and behaviors that are disrupting everyday functioning. Psychoeducation is essential for normalizing feelings and for cultivating healthy habits, patterns, and coping strategies. ADHD in Adults By the time a person with ADHD enters adulthood they have usually developed compensatory strategies to manage and even hide their ADHD symptoms. Those strategies are sometimes adaptive like setting up routines and systems, making plans, staying organized, creating limits, writing things down, engaging in regular exercise and developing healthy eating habits, etc. Without a rich network of adaptive coping strategies a person living with ADHD may find themselves searching for that ok feeling by self-medicating with caffeine, alcohol, or other substances, or aiming for such extreme perfection that they end up engaging in self-sabotaging behaviors leading to guilt, shame, and the development of a negative narrative. Something that we hear often from adults living with ADHD is that they often experience Imposer Syndrome, the feeling that they are a fraud in their own life and live with constant fear of being "found out." Adult Symptoms of ADHD Lack of focus: distractedness, carelessness, difficulty finishing tasks Disorganization: poor time management, forgetfulness “Hurried behavior”: foot-tapping, pen-tapping, speeding, switch rapidly between tasks Tendency to be bored or restless, with low mood when they are under-stimulated Racing thoughts or feelings with difficulty winding down even when tired Poor impulse control: impulse buying, interrupting conversations, substance abuse There is not a cure for ADHD, but it is highly treatable using a multidisciplinary approach. There are a variety of stimulant and non-stimulant medications that are effective at alleviating ADHD symptoms. However, they generally only work to manage some of the symptoms and they do not address an important non-pharmaceutical component of treatment - developing the social skills and tools necessary to work with the ADHD brain rather than against it. The best treatment for adults with ADHD involves a multidisciplinary approach comprised of medication, psychotherapy, and psychoeducation. If you have a loved one with ADHD, it is crucial to learn as much as you can about the disorder to be able to better support them. Support, don't Enable. One of the most helpful things you can do for your loved one with ADHD is to empathize without judgement. Remember that they are not forgetting things, making careless mistakes, losing focus, having an emotional meltdown, etc. on purpose or because they are lazy. People with ADHD are known to be passionate, creative, enthusiastic, intuitive people. They thrive on encouragement and will only give up if they feel demoralized. ADHD is not an excuse, it's an explanation. Our therapists are trained to use Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Mindfulness, Psychoeducation, Behavioral Therapy, and Parent Management Training to help you and your child work with the ADHD brain rather than against for success. ADHD in Children What Is Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD)? Millions of American children and adults have ADHD, a neurobiological disorder that can cause impulsive behavior, hyperactivity and makes it difficult to sustain attention. As a result, children with ADHD may struggle with low self-esteem, poor school performance, and difficulty making friends. While there is no cure for ADHD, treatment can make a tremendous difference in helping manage symptoms. How Can I Tell if My Child Has ADHD? First, it’s important to realize that all healthy children can be hyperactive or impulsive at one time or another. As they grow older, they may still have difficulty focusing on topics they don’t find interesting. There is a significant difference between children who have naturally higher energy levels and those with ADHD. However, if your child is having difficulty with school work, consistent problems interacting with friends and family, there is a possibility that he or she has ADHD. Typically, ADHD symptoms are noticeable as early as age 3, and they generally start before age 12. If left untreated, these symptoms may continue into adulthood. ADHD symptoms can be mild, moderate or severe. Simply Mindful Counseling provides ADHD testing for children and teens. R equest an appointment . Signs and symptoms of ADHD - Primarily Inattentive Type: A constant patterns of inattention Failure to pay close attention in school Making careless mistakes in schoolwork Difficulty following through on instructions Consistently unable to finish schoolwork or chores Trouble organizing activities and tasks Frequently losing items such as toys, pencils and schoolwork Easily distracted Signs and Symptoms of ADHD - Combined Type or Primarily Hyperactive Type also include: Constantly fidget by tapping hands, feet or squirming in their seats Must be in constant motion Frequently run around or climb when it’s inappropriate Interrupt Talk too much Have difficulty playing quietly What Type of Treatment is Available for Children with ADHD? Every child is different, and there is no one solution that will be effective for all patients. A multidisciplinary approach to treatment is recommended and generally consists of: Traditional/alternative stimulant or non-stimulant treatments. Psychoeducation, including parent training, behavior training and teaching children tools to support executive functioning, schoolwork and relationships. Therapy, to treat the self-esteem, depression, anxiety or other mental health challenges that frequently accompany ADHD.
